Bone Density Results

The DXA bone density scans are analysed by a technologist and then verified and interpreted by
A/Prof Nicholas Pocock or Prof Judith Freund. A written report and corresponding images are sent via mail or electronically to the referring GP or specialist. Patient copies are available upon request. The bone density images are analysed by state of the art computer software and the results are first compared to an age-matched reference range. This is to determine if the bone density is normal for the patient's age, weight and sex. As shown on the right, the blue area denotes the female normal reference range for age, and in this example, the patient has normal bone density for her age. To diagnose osteoporosis we apply the WHO (World Health Organisation) current guidelines by comparing the bone density to a young normal reference range. The resultant T-scores compares the bone density to the 'young normal' population and is used to classify the result as normal, osteopenic or osteoporotic. |
